8 Eating Habits for a Healthier 2019

With 2019 just around the corner, eating healthier should be on the top of the list when it comes to your New Year’s resolutions. But where do you start? Well, we’ve listed down 8 habits that you can develop as you begin your journey to a healthy new lifestyle.

1. Say No to Crash Diets

Who doesn’t want to shed off that extra weight in the shortest possible time? But think of this – dehydration, weak immune system, weakened heart, low energy, bad hair and skin. These are only some of the things that a crash diet would cost you. Not really worth it.

2. Avoid Processed Food

Sure, it’s a lot more convenient to eat processed meals such as canned meat, microwaveable meals, or going to your favourite fast food joint; but not so much when you start to realize the amount of work you need to trim-off that waistline. To add, processed food also lacks nutrients and has a lot of chemicals that will affect your body negatively.

3. Load up on Vegetables

You can eat them raw, boil them, steam them, grill them, blend them, snack on them with your favourite dip, or turn them into soups! There are lots of ways you can enjoy vegetables, so make sure you do so.

4. Prepare Your Own Meals

Today’s fast-paced and hectic life makes us slaves to fast food and delivery due to their convenience. However, one cannot argue the benefits of meals cooked at home. You become aware of what and how much you eat, thus making you a lot more careful of what you actually prepare for yourself.

5. Practice Portion Control

As in all things, moderation is key even in living a healthy lifestyle. Use smaller dishes, tall glasses, and avoid eating from the bag or box. We sometimes tend to finish everything we see, hence the smaller the container is, the better you can practice self- control.

6. Use a Food Diary

There are lots of free printable templates on the internet that you can use to record the food you consume, and you can even recycle an old notebook as your food diary. This is probably the cheapest and easiest way in developing a healthy habit. Water keeps you hydrated and makes you feel full if taken before a meal, so you won’t have to worry about unwanted calories.

8. Be Mindful When Grocery Shopping

A trip to the grocery store can sometimes ruin not only our budget, but also our ability to restrain ourselves. Plan your meals ahead. Keep a list and bring an exact amount before you make that trip. This way, you can control your urge to pick up items you don’t really need.
